The Centre for Digital Advancement (CDA) will be a research and innovation hub that will explore the potential of digital technologies to bring about positive societal and economic transformations. It will conduct research to understand the use or the lack of use of digital technologies by various strata of the society. The Centre aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, students, and policymakers from across disciplines to create impactful solutions that provide more access and opportunities to more people through the use of technology. The Centre's mission is to study and leverage digital technology for the benefit of all. The first project they will undertake is a national survey on the digital ability of the people to create an India Digital Literacy Index.
International organizations, think tanks, and governments are launching initiatives to train people in digital skills and improve their proficiency. The vision of the Government of India's Digital India Program is to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Several initiatives and schemes such as the National Mission on Education Using ICT, the National Digital Literacy Mission (2014-2016), the Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (DISHA; 2014-2016), and the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA; 2017-), aim(ed) at enabling digital proficiency among citizens, especially in the rural areas (PMGDISHA). Several NGOs and companies are also working in this sphere.
